Augsburg returned to winning ways after a 4-1 comeback over Stuttgart in the Bundesliga on Sunday.
Three second-half goals helped Augsburg end their two-match streak after Stuttgart had a fairy-tale start into the encounter as Chris Fuhrich’s solo effort and goal from 18 meters shocked Augsburg with seven minutes gone.
Augsburg tried to respond but was only able to produce half chances through Andi Zeqiri and Ruben Vargas as the match progressed.
The “Fuggerstadter” grew into the game and eventually leveled the scores at the half-hour mark when Reece Oxford nodded home a corner kick.
Five minutes later Daniel Didavi squandered a chance for Stuttgart after missing the target from promising position.
After the restart, Augsburg remained the more active team and got rewarded eight minutes into the second half after Jeffrey Gouweleeuw made the most of a Vargas corner.
Augsburg gained momentum and should have added another goal to their lead but for all that Alfred Finnbogason couldn’t finish off a counterattack at the hour mark.
Finnbogason remained in the thick of things as the Iceland international set up for Florian Niederlechner, who extended the lead to 3-1 from close range in the 72nd minute.
Augsburg wasn’t done with the scoring and made it 4-1 after Finnbogason got his name on the scorecards as well after drilling the ball from the edge of the box past Stuttgart goalkeeper Fabian Bredlow nine minutes later.
“I think we secured a well-deserved win. We fought our way into the game with every minute,” Augsburg head coach Markus Weinzierl said.
“We started well into the clash but then for some reasons I don’t know yet, we stopped to play determined and courageous football,” Stuttgart head coach Pellegrino Matarazzo said.
Despite the victory, Augsburg stay on the 16th position which is a relegation play-off spot, whereas Stuttgart remain on the 13th spot of the Bundesliga table.
Elsewhere, Borussia Monchengladbach recorded their fourth victory of the season after the first half goals from Alassane Plea and Jonas Hofmann smoothed the way for the 2-1 win over newly promoted Bochum.
The win lift Borussia on the 10th place meanwhile Bochum continue on the 14th position.
