Baerbock already in Paris

Paris (dpa) – This Thursday in Paris, Germany’s new Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock is beginning a series of inaugural visits to Europe. In the morning, the Green politician was scheduled to meet with her French counterpart Jean-Yves Le Drian. Afterwards, Baerbock was planning to travel by train to Brussels where talks are to take place with Josep Borrell, the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, US Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry and NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg. On Friday, Baerbock will fly to Warsaw for a meeting with her Polish counterpart Zbigniew Rau.

At the beginning of her trip, Baerbock emphasised the reliability of the foreign policy of the new coalition government of the SPD, Greens and FDP. “Our partners in the European Union can depend on the new German Government from day one. Europe plays the pivotal role in our foreign policy.” The prerequisite for a strong and united Europe is “that we as the EU take our fundamental values seriously and also enforce the rules we have set for ourselves together”, Baerbock warned. “Especially when it comes to the rule of law and human rights, we cannot allow Europe’s foundations to crumble away,” she said.
