WHAT IS BOXING DAY?

Boxing Day is the day after Christmas Day, the 26 December. The term ‘Boxing Day’ is thought to have originated in the 1800s when the affluent would give their servants and staff a day off and bequeath them with a boxed gift they would take home to share with their families.

Now, the day after Christmas is best known as one of the biggest sales events in our country. In fact, Monash University researchers discovered two-thirds of Aussie shoppers would delay their festive spending until today to take advantage of bargains.

WHAT ARE THE BIGGEST SHOPPING EVENTS OF THE YEAR?

While Boxing Day is a huge sales event in Australia, there are several other sales events that occur during the year that are worth paying attention to. November offers Black Friday and Cyber Monday, which are both massive sales events, as well as smaller ones like Click Frenzy.

HOW TO SHOP SMART DURING THE BOXING DAY SALES

Your best bet at avoiding the crippling decision paralysis that can inconveniently pop up during sales events is to create wish lists in advance. Influencer and deals aficionado, Dani Katralis (of @LuxeAndLemonade), told news.com.au’s Jessica Wang that this is the key to scoring bargains during sales periods – not buying a whole bunch of products you don’t want or need. “Go in prepared,” says Dani. “[A wish list] also doubles as your decision making guide. When you look back at your wishlist during sale time you can see if you really want it.”
