JCPS students begin school year with smiles, excitement and some changes

Hundreds of thousands of JCPS students throughout the community began their school year Wednesday. “Seems to be a lot of excitement to be back in school with the kids. So a lot of energy and I think that’s awesome,” JCPS superintendent Marty Pollio said Wednesday morning. “They seem real excited so lots of smiles today.”The smiles were underneath the face coverings required for all students and staff at JCPS facilities.”Really hoping we go back into the yellow in the community for many reasons but particularly we can make masks optional at that time,” Pollio said. “We knew it was going to be a tough year last year. I think what we see this year is hopefully a feel of a return to a more of a normal type school year; 175 days in school, kids are back in.”As learning gets underway, there is also a new security plan in place district-wide. School-based safety administrators will be based inside every middle and high school. Six safety administrators will be hired to serve elementary schools. For Wilkerson Elementary School students, their year started inside Watson Lane Elementary School after a failed inspection on the new building but teachers said they were eager to do what was most important – begin learning with their students. “I’ve learned to be flexible with everything and the start of this year, it was just a little bit of a challenge but we were able to overcome that and I’m excited that we started in person so I really got to be with the kids and kind of make the room ready for them and just be ready to greet them and have them come in,” teacher Jacqueline Brochu said. Pollio said Wilkerson is expected to be finished in the next two weeks.
