KY’s first locally Black-owned dollar store celebrates one year

A locally Black-owned dollar store is celebrating one year in business this month.Community Dollar is on Dixie Highway near the Jefferson County Clerk’s Office and Kroger.The store carries a variety of household items, beauty and health supplies, school and office supplies, baby items, food, drinks and more.Erick Johnson and his wife opened the store one year ago with hopes of providing the community with necessities at an affordable price.Since then he said it’s been successful but there have been struggles too.”I would say people knowing where we are is kind of always the thing,” Johnson said. “We hear ‘I don’t know where you are.'”The address of the store is 4917 Dixie Hwy, Louisville, KY 40216.Johnson hopes to grow a steady customer base and eventually expand the business.We, my wife, would love to have one big store,” Johnson said. “My goal is to have multiple stores around the state of Kentucky, that’s definitely the dream. We’ve got to get there though and we’ve got to start here first.
