New $12 million distillery, brewery project coming to Smoketown

A long-vacant cold-storage facility in the Smoketown neighborhood will be redeveloped into a distillery and a brewery, according to Louisville Business First.The 20,000-square-foot building is located near the intersection of Lampton and Logan streets. It sits on the Merchant’s Ice Tower property at 801 Logan St., next to the 13-story tower. “The first phase is the brewery. It is very close to being real, we’re just working through some financing on that,” James Duffy said. “The second phase is Ferncliff Distillery, which used to be in operation on this site in 1870.” Duffy expects to hire 25 employees at Ferncliff in the first year and 40 by the end of year three. He added that the Smoketown property is a perfect location for his distillery because of its proximity to Downtown Louisville, the Highlands and Shelby Park.“We’re going to be a small, craft distillery,” Duffy said. “We’ll probably only produce maybe four barrels a day out of here, max. You know, we won’t be a massive distillery, but we’ll make really good quality bourbon.
