Qld govt trying to ‘protect’ budget is ‘worrying’ for Aus-Japan relationship

Shadow Home Affairs Minister Karen Andrews says the action taken by the Queensland government to “protect and preserve” its budget is “quite worrying” in terms of Australia’s relationship with Japan.

Japan’s Ambassador to Australia Shingo Yamagami criticised the Queensland government’s new tax regime for coal miners – which proposed new higher coal mining royalties.

“The fact that there was, what seems to be, fairly unilateral action taken by the Queensland government to try and protect, preserve and improve its budget bottom line is really quite worrying in terms of the relationship that Australia has had with Japan,” Ms Andrews told Sky News Australia.

“And the relationship that we need to continue to have with Japan.”
