There may not have been any LaLiga Santander matches over the past week due to the international break in some parts of the world, but the LaLiga news carrousel didn’t let up. LaLiga players starred for their national teams, big name new signings came in to Spanish football, new contracts…

Adama Traoré returns to Barcelona

Following the arrivals of Dani Alves and Ferran Torres, Barcelona completed their third January signing this week by bringing in Adama Traoré on loan from Wolves. The winger was born just a few hundred metres from the Camp Nou and came through the club’s prestigious La Masia youth academy before debuting for the Barça first team alongside now coach Xavi.

Sevilla land Anthony Martial

Sevilla have made a statement of intent by bringing in Anthony Martial on loan from Manchester United. As they sit just four points behind leaders Real Madrid, Sevilla are hoping that the France international and former Golden Boy winner can add an extra dimension to their attack over the second half of the season.


Atlético have their Trippier replacement

Atlético de Madrid’s main goal for the January transfer window was to find a replacement for Kieran Trippier and they’ve now got their man: Daniel Wass from Valencia CF. The Dane is able to play in midfield and at right-back, and his versatility is exactly what Diego Simeone was looking for. Wass also knows LaLiga Santander well having made 224 appearances in Spain’s top flight from his time at RC Celta and Valencia.

Young reinforcements for Valencia

Although they’ve lost Daniel Wass this window, Valencia have been able to strengthen too by bringing in two exciting young talents. One is Swiss centre-back Eray Cömert, who arrives on a permanent deal from Basel to help bolster José Bordalás’ back line. The other is Ilaix Moriba, the Barcelona academy graduate who joins on loan from RB Leipzig to add an extra option in midfield.

Signings for survival

Several of the sides near the bottom of the LaLiga Santander table have made important transfers too, as they look to stave off relegation. These include Levante’s acquisition of Uruguay international Martín Cáceres, Granada’s signing of Serbian midfielder Njegoš Petrović or Getafe’s fourth and fifth additions of a busy window: Okay Yokuşlu and Gastón Álvarez.


Loum and Dia reach the AFCON semi-finals

The 2022 Africa Cup of Nations has reached the semi-final stages and Alavés’ Mamadou Loum and Villarreal’s Boulaye Dia are into the final four with Senegal. They defeated Equatorial Guinea 3-1 in the quarter-finals, with Loum’s Alavés teammate Jesús Owono having impressed in goals during Equatorial Guinea’s fairy tale run to the quarters. Senegal will now meet Burkina Faso on Wednesday.

LaLiga Santander goals in CONMEBOL qualifying

South American World Cup qualifying is heating up and several LaLiga Santander players featured and scored in the latest round of fixtures, with Luis Suárez firing in a winner for Uruguay, Casemiro bagging a goal for Brazil, and Darwin Machís contributing to a Venezuela victory with a goal of his own.

Joan Jordán signs with Sevilla until 2027

Joan Jordán has become a key player for Sevilla since his move to the Andalusian club in 2019 and he has now agreed a lengthy contract extension, one that sees him commit to the Nervionenses until 2027. “I promise to give my best, to improve and to take Sevilla as far up the table as possible,” the midfielder said at a ceremony held to mark the occasion.

Diego Simeone’s documentary is released

A documentary about Diego Simeone’s remarkable career as a player and as a coach has been released this past week, with the six-part series titled ‘Simeone: ‘Vivir Partido a Partido’– ‘Simeone: Living Match by Match.’ In addition to interviews with the man himself, the likes of Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, David Beckham, Ronaldo Nazário and José Mourinho also contribute.

UD Ibiza bring Anna Tur to Can Misses

Something special is happening at UD Ibiza, where new coach Paco Jémez’s arrival has inspired the LaLiga SmartBank side to three wins in a row. Ahead of the island club’s Monday night fixture against Real Zaragoza, the Celestes have announced that world-famous DJ Anna Tur will perform at the Estadi Can Misses ahead of the game and at half-time. She is the latest of many DJs to work with the club, who are committed to showcasing the island’s culture.
